Stephen Abene, spokesperson for the Nasarawa State Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), stated that this adjustment aims to improve inmate welfare and address nutritional concerns in line with current economic realities.
Abene explained, “The government recently approved N1,150 for feeding each inmate, which will be reflected in the 2025 budget. This increase is necessary to adapt to the present economic conditions.”
This decision follows growing calls from concerned citizens and organizations advocating for a raise in inmates’ feeding allowances, especially after NCoS Controller General Haliru Nababa revealed that the previous daily allowance was only N750. Notably, it was highlighted that the daily allocation for each of the 900 dogs maintained by the service was N800.
A recent viral video from the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar depicted poorly prepared meals served to inmates, prompting the NCoS to assert that this did not represent the overall standards across facilities, although they pledged to investigate the matter.
Additionally, reports indicated that 12 inmates at the Keffi Medium Security Custodial Centre in Nasarawa State died in September 2024 from health issues linked to inadequate nutrition.
