A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday at Palmgroove in the Onipanu area of Lagos State, as a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, identified as Sunday Bukola, reportedly fatally crushed a five-year-old named Malik. The heart-wrenching incident occurred around 1:30 pm when the driver struck Malik, his brother, and their mother as they were attempting to cross the BRT lane.
Sources reveal that the impact claimed Malik’s life instantly, while his sibling and mother sustained varying degrees of injuries. The victims, identified as Malik (5 years old) and Basit (2 years old), were rushed to the hospital. Tragically, Malik could not survive his injuries, and despite ongoing treatment, Rofiat (the mother) and Basit continue to receive medical attention for their injuries.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that the driver has been apprehended, and an investigation is underway. Hundeyin stated, “The corpse has been evacuated and deposited at the mortuary. The driver was later arrested and is in police custody, and an investigation is ongoing.”
This unfortunate event is reminiscent of a similar tragedy reported by BUSHRADIOGIST last year when three individuals lost their lives following a collision between two motorcycles and a BRT vehicle in the Alakija area of Lagos, as confirmed by the Lagos State Police Command. The recent incident underscores the importance of ensuring pedestrian safety and vigilance around BRT lanes in the city.
