The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported on Monday that an auto crash in Kogi resulted in the loss of 13 lives and left two individuals injured.
Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, the Sector Commander of FRSC in Kogi, informed the News Agency of Nigeria about the tragic incident that occurred around 7:30 pm on Sunday.
According to Oyedeji, the accident involved a commercial Sharon bus and an articulated cement truck, transpiring near Obajana Market along Obajana-Lokoja Road in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi.
He explained that the Sharon bus had halted behind a truck near the market for passengers to make purchases when the cement truck, due to brake failure, collided with it from behind.
“The impact caused the bus to erupt into flames, engulfing most of the passengers onboard. Also caught in the blaze were the bus, two trucks, and a motorcycle,” Oyedeji stated.
The bus was reportedly en route to Abuja from the southern part of the country.
Despite rescue efforts by FRSC personnel, Red Cross Nigeria, and the Police, the intensity of the fire hindered their ability to save the victims. However, the remains of those affected were recovered, while the two injured individuals were rushed to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana for medical treatment.
Oyedeji expressed concern that no hospital in Kogi was willing to accommodate the charred bodies, which might necessitate a mass burial if no relatives claim them.
Describing the incident as “very tragic and regrettable,” the sector commander urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles to prevent such accidents.
He emphasized the importance of conducting thorough vehicle checks before embarking on journeys to mitigate the risk of road crashes.
