The ill-fated boat, which departed from Durga Mashaya in Borgu LG, was carrying an estimated 100 passengers and a cargo of goods en route to the Wara market in Kebbi State. Unfortunately, the vessel capsized due to the combined forces of strong waves and overloading.
Abdullahi Baba Arah, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, officially confirmed the incident to Daily Trust on Wednesday, January 17. He disclosed that, regrettably, three males and five females lost their lives in the mishap. The remaining victims, totaling 12 individuals, were successfully rescued by a diligent search and rescue team comprising local divers. Their swift response played a crucial role in minimizing the overall casualties.
Baba Arah reiterated that the boat, originally designed to accommodate 100 passengers, was overloaded with both people and goods destined for the Wara market in Kebbi State. The tragedy unfolded as a result of the adverse combination of strong waves and overloading.
The Director General also provided the names of some survivors, including Malama Adama Babangida, Bello Usman, Bawa Alh. Ayuba, Danyarbawa Danmanyan, Umaru Alhaji Mainasara, Rufayatu, Ladidi, Abdullahi Abubakar, Isah Suleiman, Rakiya Abdullahi, and Sakina Ibrahim. Despite the rescue efforts, the situation remains critical with twelve individuals still missing, adding a somber note to the aftermath of the unfortunate incident.
