Rather than allowing these individuals to languish in detention or undergo potentially destructive dissolution, Ihediwa proposed redirecting their knowledge toward positive and constructive pursuits. He emphasized that the knowledge possessed by these cyber fraudsters could be categorized into two types: positive and negative. Despite their education, he argued that their inherent knowledge often diverged from the ideal positive knowledge required for societal development.
Ihediwa stressed the importance of rechanneling the expertise of the Yahoo Boys into meaningful ventures, asserting that doing so would greatly benefit the nation. He noted that the transformation of their skills could contribute positively to the development of the country.
During the award ceremony, a representative of the host organization, Cornerstone.ng, Mr. Chris Oji, highlighted Ihediwa’s deserving nature of the award, acknowledging his outstanding contributions to software development and information technology in Nigeria.
In a related development, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, announced plans to provide training for repentant internet fraudsters, colloquially referred to as ‘yahoo boys.’ The proposed training will cover advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills and other vocational capabilities at a technology park in the state. This initiative aims to rehabilitate individuals involved in cyber fraud and equip them with skills that can be utilized positively in the technology sector.
This approach suggests a proactive stance toward addressing cybercrime by transforming the skills of those involved into assets for the nation’s technological advancement.
