In Ikachi Akparata village, Effium, Ebonyi State, tragedy struck as suspected Ezza warriors launched a brutal attack. The assault, which occurred during the early hours of Sunday, May 19, 2024, also saw the destruction of five houses, adding to the already profound devastation in the region.
The longstanding conflict between the Ezza and Effium communities has been a source of ongoing strife since 2021, resulting in a substantial loss of lives and destruction of property valued at billions of naira. Recent events have only exacerbated the situation, with a particularly heinous attack just two weeks prior in Inikiri Umuezeoka, where eleven people, including a pregnant woman and children as young as two years old, were brutally killed. Additionally, thirty homes were set ablaze during this tragic incident.
Confirming the latest assault, DSP Joshua Ukandu, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, highlighted the extensive damage caused by the assailants, emphasizing the destruction of property worth millions of naira. He assured the public that law enforcement agencies are diligently working to restore peace to the region and to unravel the underlying causes of the escalating communal tensions.
“We are aware of the attack, and the command is actively engaged in addressing the situation,” stated the PPRO. “Our collaborative efforts with other security agencies aim to bring about lasting peace in the area. Furthermore, we are conducting a thorough investigation to understand the root cause of this latest outbreak of violence.”
The commitment of the police force to safeguarding lives and property in Ebonyi State remains resolute, as they continue to strive for peace and stability amidst the turmoil.
