A tragic incident unfolded over the weekend at Abia State University, where a 400-level History and International Relations student lost his life during a clash between rival cult groups. The Abia State Government officially confirmed the unfortunate incident during the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti on Monday.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, briefed journalists on the situation, revealing that the state government has taken immediate steps to restore normalcy to the institution. Security agencies have been dispatched to Abia State University Uturu to address the ongoing tensions and ensure the safety of students. Kanu also issued a stern advisory to students, urging them to refrain from engaging in violence and to focus on their academic pursuits.
“It has come to the notice of the state government about skirmishes in Abia State University, Uturu, between student groups where a student lost his life. Some remedial actions have been taken to return normalcy (in the institution). The state government has dispatched some security agencies to Abia State University Uturu,” stated Commissioner Okey Kanu.
According to reports from PUNCH, the atmosphere at the university remains tense in the aftermath of the clash between the rival cult groups that claimed the life of the 400-level student. Eyewitnesses recounted the incident, detailing how members of one group attacked the victim within the university premises, resulting in his tragic death.
While the school authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwumelie, assured the public that the police are aware of the matter and are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
As the community grapples with this unfortunate event, the hope is that swift and effective measures will be implemented to address the root causes of such clashes and prevent future occurrences, creating a safer environment for the students and faculty at Abia State University.
