Operatives from the Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have apprehended four individuals involved in the issuance of counterfeit transaction credit alerts to unsuspecting victims, according to a statement released by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale on Monday.

The arrests took place in Maiduguri metropolis, Borno State, following intelligence gathered on the suspects’ fraudulent activities. Preliminary investigations revealed that the individuals were utilizing a banking business app to make purchases of both food and non-food items, while also extracting funds from Point of Sale agents and cashiers. Subsequently, they would send fabricated transaction credits to their targets.

The statement disclosed that the four suspects will face legal proceedings once the ongoing investigations are concluded.

It is worth noting that EFCC had previously reported the interception of 21 trucks loaded with food items allegedly being smuggled into neighboring countries, labeling it as economic sabotage. EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, during a radio interview, explained that the concealed foodstuffs were detected by vigilant EFCC operatives, preventing the illicit activities from going unnoticed.
