A devastating fire erupted at Bishop Crowther Memorial Seminary School in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, claiming the life of a student and causing significant damage to school property. The incident occurred late on Saturday night, around 11:30 pm, with the school’s hostel bearing the brunt of the blaze, including the destruction of mattresses and personal belongings of students.

Although the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, reports indicate that immediate action was taken, with firefighters and a fire truck swiftly deployed to the scene. Despite their efforts, one student lost their life in the tragic incident, and their body was transferred to a mortuary.

Chukwudi Chiketa, the Chief of the state’s Fire Service, confirmed the containment of the fire and visited the school on Sunday to assess the extent of the damage. During the inspection, the school’s principal provided details of the impact, highlighting the devastation to a section of the hostel.

Expressing condolences to the bereaved family and the school management, Chiketa emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety measures at all times. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the critical need for vigilance and precautionary measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
