A deadly communal clash between the Montol and Taroh ethnic groups in the Ponglong community, Mikang Local Government Area of Plateau State has resulted in at least nine fatalities, alongside extensive destruction of homes, farmlands, and barns. The conflict, which erupted on Saturday night and continued into Sunday morning, March 24, 2024, reportedly left numerous others severely injured.
According to local sources, the confrontation stemmed from a dispute over farmland between members of the two ethnic groups. Despite the deployment of security forces to restore peace, criminals took advantage of the chaos to engage in cattle rustling activities.
Hon. Daniel Kungmi, the transition chairman of the council, confirmed the incident, attributing the escalation of violence to the involvement of angry youths and criminals. He emphasized the urgent need for security intervention to quell the unrest.
State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Musa Ashoms, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the root cause of the conflict as a disputed land issue. He emphasized the importance of employing peaceful conflict resolution methods and cautioned against resorting to violence.
The State Police Command spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, confirmed the incident, stating that security measures had been heightened in the area, with ongoing investigations into the matter.
The tragic clash underscores the need for communities to prioritize dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts to prevent further loss of lives and property.
