Travel Alert: Owerri Airport Runway To Shut For 25 Days As FAAN Begins Repairs

Published

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for 25 days to allow repairs and resurfacing work.

The proposed closure is scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, although the authority noted that the date is yet to receive final confirmation.

According to Bush Radio Academy, FAAN disclosed the plan in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire.

The authority explained that the decision followed the deterioration of sections of the runway, where potholes and widespread cracks have reportedly affected the surface. Heavy rainfall in recent weeks has further worsened the condition of the damaged areas, making rehabilitation necessary.

FAAN said the planned project would involve repairing the affected sections, treating existing cracks and resurfacing areas that require attention. The work is intended to restore the runway’s condition and improve the safety of airport operations.

The rehabilitation is also expected to enhance the airport’s readiness for increased passenger traffic and flight activities during the Christmas travel season, when many Nigerians travel to and from the South-East.

Beyond the repairs, FAAN disclosed that the project would include extending the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft. The proposed expansion is expected to increase the facility’s operational capacity and support the growth of air traffic in the region.

The authority added that the improvements could enhance passenger convenience and make the airport better equipped to handle future travel demand.

Passengers planning to travel through Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport during the proposed closure period have been advised to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules, possible changes and alternative travel arrangements.

FAAN’s announcement comes as travellers and airlines prepare for the potential disruption associated with the temporary closure, pending final confirmation of the commencement date.
