Upon arrival, King, the Nigerian national, reportedly confiscated Barnali’s visa, passport, and cash, holding her captive alongside his accomplice, Daniel. The captors denied her food and water during the ordeal. Barnali managed to make contact with her family on the fourth day through a WhatsApp call, seeking assistance for her release. King allegedly demanded ransom and threatened her parents, prompting the family to file a complaint with the Dispur Police station and reach out to the Delhi Crime Branch.

The situation gained media attention, and Nigerian nationals studying in Assam reportedly played a crucial role in alerting authorities in Nigeria. Additionally, a friend of the family who owns a hotel near the captivity location assisted in the rescue efforts. With collective efforts, Barnali was eventually freed, and she returned to Mumbai on November 18.
