The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees the Coast Guard, has not officially commented on Fagan’s dismissal. However, reports from Fox News cite senior officials pointing to her handling of border security threats, an “overemphasis” on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, and concerns about the Coast Guard’s response to sexual assault investigations as reasons for her removal.

President Donald Trump, who declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border earlier this week, has prioritized border security as a central tenet of his administration. Critics claim that Fagan’s leadership failed to align with these objectives.

“Border security is a critical priority for the president,” a senior official stated, adding that Fagan’s dismissal reflects a broader effort to ensure federal agencies adopt a stronger security-oriented focus.

Acting DHS Secretary Benjamine Huffman acknowledged Fagan’s contributions in a statement to the Coast Guard, saying, “She served a long and distinguished career, and I thank her for her dedication to our nation.”

Fagan, who assumed leadership of the Coast Guard in 2022, previously served as vice commandant and held positions across all seven continents, earning recognition for her groundbreaking career. However, her biography has been removed from the Coast Guard’s official website.

Fagan’s tenure marked a historic milestone for the U.S. military, yet her focus on DEI initiatives and the handling of sexual assault cases within the Coast Guard has drawn criticism from the Trump administration, which has been openly skeptical of government diversity programs.
