Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has revealed that the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), was advised to declare Chief MKO Abiola as the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election but failed to do so.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking during an edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Oshiomhole argued that nothing catastrophic would have occurred if Nwosu had announced Abiola as the winner. The former Edo State Governor noted that the worst consequence for Nwosu would have been imprisonment by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd).

According to Oshiomhole, Nwosu lacked the courage to do the right thing and missed an opportunity to handle the situation better. He emphasized that if Abiola, who was neither a militant nor a political scientist, could boldly claim his victory, Nwosu, with his academic background, should have displayed even more resolve.

Oshiomhole said:
“If Nwosu had declared him, heaven would not fall. At worst, he would have been detained, but how would they justify detaining him when he was following the military-enacted law?

“We told him that having conducted the election up to the presidency level, he should take the next step and declare the winner. Abiola died fighting for his mandate, even proclaiming himself as the winner—something Nwosu was supposed to do. If Abiola, a businessman with no militant background, had the courage to say ‘I won this election,’ then someone with a political science background should have shown even greater resolve,” Oshiomhole asserted.
