Bakare made the statement on Tuesday while speaking to his spiritual children in London. He emphasized that the country has struggled to progress because Nigeria’s elite benefit from systemic corruption and work to eliminate anyone who attempts to challenge the status quo.

In his message, titled “Celebrating God’s Legacy – Honoring the Past and Celebrating the Future,” Bakare acknowledged that while he was not against Nigeria’s engagements with institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the country’s leadership had failed to address the root causes of its issues. Instead, he said, they focus on building legacies without tackling the underlying problems.

He remarked, “Do you not think there are nations that don’t want Nigeria to prosper? We are a threat to them. But before blaming others, what about the giants who are cornering our nation’s wealth? Our leaders cannot afford to go to bed with both eyes closed when dealing with these giants. The elites continue to benefit from the corruption and if you’re not part of them, they’ll eliminate you by any means.”

Bakare continued, “I’m not against the World Bank or IMF, but like David in the Bible, we must inquire about the root issues in our nation. Our founding fathers, regardless of their political views, didn’t go into politics for personal gain. Shouldn’t we honor the past while making sincere efforts to secure the future? Instead of just building legacies, let’s address the real problems we face.
