Sources who spoke with Punch suggest that Obasa may be reinstated and given the option to resign voluntarily following deliberations during a Governance Advisory Council (GAC) meeting held on Monday at the Governor’s Lodge in Marina, Lagos.

A senior GAC member, speaking on Tuesday, revealed that discussions extended into the following day, with key stakeholders insisting that Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2025, was illegal and an affront to the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.

The GAC, which serves as the highest decision-making body of the APC in Lagos, comprises influential party figures who play a critical role in state governance, including affairs concerning the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Following Obasa’s impeachment, lawmakers unanimously elected former Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, as his replacement. However, some GAC members argue that Obasa should be reinstated—at least temporarily—before considering stepping down on his own terms.

GAC member Muraina Taiwo emphasized the council’s stance, stating that while lawmakers appeared firm in their support for Meranda, they must align with the party’s directive.

“It is crucial for the lawmakers to allow Obasa to return to the House, where he may then decide to step down voluntarily,” Taiwo said.

He further noted, “I understand that the GAC has communicated the party’s position, but the lawmakers insist they stand by their decision. They have agreed to document their grievances and escalate them to the Presidency.”

“Let’s see how things unfold between today and the next few days. Perhaps, once they return from Abuja, the next course of action will become clearer,” he added.

Taiwo also stressed that lawmakers cannot compel Obasa to resign, stating, “They should respect the directive of the party leadership, allow the Speaker to resume, and cooperate with him. If he chooses to resign, that should be his personal decision, not one imposed upon him.”
