Twist In LP Crisis: Abure Still Chairman As INEC Ponders Supreme Court Ruling

Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 4, 2025, which overturned the Court of Appeal’s recognition of Julius Abure as the Labour Party (LP) national chairman, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to update its official records. Other party officials listed include Farouk Umar (National Secretary), Oluchi Operah (National Treasurer), Hadiza Kishimi (National Financial Secretary), and Akingbade Oyelekan (National Legal Adviser).

The Supreme Court, in its judgment, ruled that the case was outside the jurisdiction of the judiciary, describing it as an internal party matter. It upheld the appeal filed by Nenadi Usman, who was named caretaker chairperson of the party in September 2024. The apex court consequently nullified earlier rulings by both the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court that had affirmed Abure’s position.

Delivering the lead judgment, Justice John Okoro stated that leadership disputes within a political party fall outside the scope of judicial intervention, reinforcing the principle that such issues are strictly internal. The verdict has sparked contrasting interpretations, with both Abure’s and Usman’s factions claiming it validates their positions.
