From Lahti To The Dock: Finland To Try Simon Ekpa For Spreading Terror Propaganda

Ekpa, who has been vocal in advocating for the secession of Biafra, faces grave charges including incitement to violence and financing terrorism. The Finnish government had announced his arrest in November 2024, along with four others, noting that they were under investigation for suspected terror-related activities.
According to Finnish police, Ekpa — who refers to himself as the “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile — allegedly used social media platforms to incite violence against both civilians and security personnel in southeastern Nigeria.
Local media outlet Yle reported that the Päijät-Häme District Court had ordered Ekpa’s remand on charges of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent.
In addition to his arrest, Ekpa is among 17 individuals whose assets and financial resources were frozen by Finnish authorities due to suspected links to terrorism financing.
Initially represented by lawyer Ilkka Kopra, Ekpa has now appointed Kaarle Gummerus as his new legal counsel. Gummerus confirmed to BBC Pidgin that he has received the pre-trial case file and is currently reviewing the materials in preparation for the court proceedings scheduled for June 2025.
“We’ve received the pre-trial file and are examining it to determine the next course of action,” Gummerus told the BBC. “As for the trial date, the case will go to court in June 2025.”
