James Michael Anajuwe, a freshman in Information Technology, and Musa Hussein, a first-year student in Software Engineering, were part of the group of students abducted during a raid on the campus by armed assailants on May 9, 2024.
Although security forces and local hunters managed to rescue 20 of the kidnapped students, James and Musa were not as fortunate. Reports from the Nigerian Tribune suggest that the kidnappers may have carried out these killings in retaliation for the loss of their own members during the rescue operation.
In response to this heinous act, the NGO Education For All (E4A) strongly denounced the murders, emphasizing the depravity of targeting innocent students. They expressed concern that such violence could deter young people from pursuing education, calling for united efforts to safeguard educational institutions.
E4A revealed that negotiations were underway between the parents of the abducted students and the kidnappers, which had temporarily slowed down security operations to ensure the safety of the captives. Despite hopes for a peaceful resolution, it is reported that James and Musa were allegedly killed at the kidnappers’ hideout in Kwara State.
The NGO urged authorities in Kogi and Kwara States to collaborate in apprehending the perpetrators, believed to be hiding in a forested area near the border of both states. They also extended condolences to the families of the deceased students and called upon national security agencies and the Ministry of Education to reinforce initiatives for securing schools nationwide.
The tragic loss of James and Musa underscores the urgent need for concerted action to address the escalating insecurity threatening the safety of students and educational institutions across Nigeria
