The students face four counts including conspiracy, unauthorized access to MTN’s web-based platform known as Application Programming Interface (API), and unlawful conversion. These charges were filed by the police, who allege that the crimes occurred between January and April 2024 in Lagos and Edo States.

Prosecutor Justine Enang stated that the defendants, along with accomplices who are currently at large, accessed MTN’s API and used the obtained data to defraud the company. The alleged offences violate Sections 27(1)(b), 6(2), and 28(1)(b) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015, as well as Section 18(2)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Their lawyers submitted bail applications, which the prosecutor acknowledged but requested time to review. As a result, Justice Akintayo Aluko adjourned the case to August 5, 2024, to hear the bail applications.
