El-Rufai, who is facing a nine-count charge filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over alleged abuse of office and dishonest handling of loan funds, remains in custody after his bail hearing was adjourned to June.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time, Udenta argued that the former governor should not be kept in detention indefinitely under the guise of ongoing investigations. He maintained that authorities can continue their inquiries without holding him in custody.
He further suggested that less restrictive measures, such as restricting El-Rufai’s movement or seizing his passport, could be used instead of prolonged detention.
“You cannot keep a man in perpetuity in detention because you are doing investigation. That is injustice,” he said.
Meanwhile, former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore also raised concerns over what he described as the misuse of legal processes against El-Rufai, urging the courts to uphold the rule of law and ensure fair treatment. He cautioned against using bail conditions as a form of punishment or intimidation, stressing that justice must be applied fairly to all parties.
