The incident occurred on March 14, 2023, in Zeerust, North West Province. The court ordered that the two life sentences run concurrently and declared Mmutle unfit to possess a firearm.

Mmutle, a Detective Warrant Officer at the Nietverdint police station, was separated from his wife due to marital issues. On the day of the crime, Mmutle followed his wife, Motshegwa Mmutle, her boyfriend, Katlego Selokwane, and a friend to the friend’s residence. After their arrival, he confronted them, firing approximately twelve bullets, killing both Motshegwa and Katlego instantly. The friend managed to escape unharmed.

Mmutle called the police himself and was arrested that same day, facing two counts of murder. He was denied bail and has been in custody since.

During sentencing, State Prosecutor Advocate Mabale argued that the murders were premeditated and deprived the victims of their constitutional right to life. Mabale emphasized that, as a law enforcement officer, Mmutle was expected to protect rather than harm his victims. The state urged the court to impose life imprisonment, citing no substantial grounds for deviating from the prescribed minimum sentence under Section 51(1) of the Criminal Law Amendment Act 105 of 1997.

Magistrate Mothibi, in delivering the sentence, noted Mmutle’s lack of remorse and criticized him for failing to uphold the values expected of a police officer. Magistrate Mothibi pointed out that calling the police after the shooting did not reflect genuine remorse.

Dr. Rachel Makhari, Director of Public Prosecutions in North West, welcomed the sentence and praised the prosecutor and others involved for ensuring justice. She hopes the sentence will deter others from resorting to violence as a solution to their problems.
