This decision emerged from a meeting of the party’s governors on Tuesday in Akure, Ondo State.

Sources close to the discussions revealed to Daily Trust that the governors are concerned about factionalism within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and are united in their efforts to maintain the integrity of the PDP. The urgency of the situation was underscored by the timing of the meeting, which took place just before the official launch of the PDP governorship campaign rally in Ondo State.

It was agreed that Damagum will remain in his position as acting national chairman until the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for October 24. Both Damagum and Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, the Deputy National Chairman (South), were present, alongside key party figures such as Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, and Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Ademola Adeleke (Osun).

The discussions followed a virtual meeting on Monday where Governor Adeleke expressed his frustration over the ongoing crisis and its potential impact on his bid for re-election in 2026. He raised concerns about how the factionalism is affecting party unity and reportedly confronted Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State for not supporting the North-Central’s push to retain the chairmanship position, given his status as a first-term governor from the zone. In response, Mutfwang indicated a willingness to support a chair from the North-Central, aligning with the party’s constitution to resolve the current impasse.

Initially, Mutfwang, along with governors Makinde, Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), and Agbu Kefas (Taraba), opposed Damagum’s removal. However, during the virtual meeting, Makinde suggested that if Damagum were to resign, he should be given a smooth transition. At Tuesday’s meeting, it was concluded that while Damagum would continue as acting chairman for a few more days, the NEC meeting would be used to confirm the North-Central’s nomination for the position and to discuss potential dates for a national convention.
