Emery revealed after the match that he urged his players before kickoff to seize control of the occasion and show their hunger on the pitch, a message that inspired a commanding performance and a historic triumph for the club.
“We played in a very serious way this year, so focused, and of course, the players showed their desire,” Emery said after the final.
“I told them: ‘We need desire in this competition and show it on the field. You are the protagonists.’ And they did it.”
Aston Villa took control of the match with goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers, sealing a comfortable victory over the Bundesliga side.
Tielemans opened the scoring to give Villa an early advantage, before Buendía doubled the lead to put Emery’s team firmly in command. Rogers later added the third goal to complete a convincing display as Freiburg struggled to match Villa’s intensity.
The victory also marked a major milestone for Emery, who became the first manager in history to win the Europa League with three different clubs. He had previously lifted the trophy three times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal.
The Spanish coach now joins elite company alongside Carlo Ancelotti, José Mourinho and Giovanni Trapattoni for the most major European final wins by a manager.
