Shagari made the remarks on Thursday during an interview on Arise TV, where he described Fubara as a mature and well-educated leader with the constitutional right to decide whether or not to contest future elections.

He stated that the governor’s decision followed wide consultations and should be respected as a personal political choice.

According to him, Fubara did not indicate at any point that he was pressured or influenced by any individual or group to step aside.

“He stated that the decision came after consultations and that he remains committed to his political affiliation. He has also not suggested that anyone forced or influenced his choice,” Shagari said.

He further stressed that the Rivers governor, like every Nigerian, has the democratic freedom to either participate in politics or opt out.

“Governor Fubara is a mature and well-educated leader who, like every Nigerian, has the right to participate in the democratic process or choose not to,” he said.

Shagari added that Fubara’s decision not to participate in the 2027 political process should be respected as a personal choice without speculation or external interpretations.
