UNIBEN Killing Crackdown: Edo Security Squad Arrests 12 Suspected Cultists In Benin Raids

The operation was conducted by the Special Security Squad, code-named Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers, following the killing of a young man near the gate of University of Benin on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

The raids were led by the Chief Security Officer and Principal Security Officer to Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Security operatives stormed several areas including Ekosodin, Isihor, Old Road off S&T Barracks, Airport Road, 19th Street Ugbowo, Ogba-Evbuodia, and Evbuomore Quarters within Benin City.

Speaking on the operation, the spokesperson for the security squad, Noah Idemudia, alleged that some Okaigheles in Edo communities were aiding violent criminal activities.

According to him, intelligence gathered by security agencies indicated that sophisticated weapons used in attacks across the state were often traced to certain communities.

He warned community leaders to ensure peace within their domains and cautioned against the possession of illegal weapons, stressing that violators would be treated as criminals.

Idemudia clarified, however, that the 12 arrested suspects were not directly connected to the killing near the UNIBEN gate.

He explained that the suspects were allegedly identified as members of various cult groups after operatives reportedly discovered cult-related symbols, signs, and other incriminating materials in their possession.

The suspects have since been transferred to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Edo State Police Command for further investigation.

The security team also sealed two buildings allegedly linked to cult operations. One of the apartments, located in Ogba-Evbuodia, was reportedly being used as a centre for cult initiation activities.

According to Idemudia, operatives came under attack while attempting to arrest suspects at the property, prompting authorities to seal the building and invite its owner for questioning.

Another apartment in Evbuomore Quarters was allegedly found containing shrines and fetish objects believed to have been used for initiation into confraternities. The owner of the property was also invited for questioning.

The Edo State Government further warned individuals sponsoring cultism and violent crimes to desist immediately.

Idemudia also issued a strong warning against any planned cult anniversary celebrations within the state, stressing that security agencies were prepared to arrest anyone involved in such gatherings.

“Cult anniversary celebrations will not be tolerated in Edo State,” he said.
