Reports from BUSHRADIOGIST indicate that Akpata was subjected to an attack by suspected political hooligans at the senior staff club of the university on April 12, 2024. Allegedly, Akpata had been invited by the senior staff club for an interactive session.
During the unfortunate incident, it was reported that the president of the student union purportedly led a group of students in disrupting the event. The students allegedly demanded an immediate halt to the proceedings, asserting that they had not been adequately notified of the gathering.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the students’ conduct turned disorderly, resulting in the rough treatment of several staff members, including a member of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), who was reportedly subjected to severe physical assault and subsequently hospitalized.
Consequently, the university administration swiftly established a panel to probe the matter and ascertain its underlying causes. Following the conclusion of the investigation, the University Registrar, A.A. Bobola, issued a statement on Monday, April 29, 2024, announcing the indefinite suspension of the student union.
The statement issued by Bobola stated, “After thorough deliberation on the findings of the Management, the Vice-Chancellor has sanctioned the suspension of the University’s Student Union.
