Clad in military attire, the assailants appeared to be on a kidnapping mission but were confronted by two armed police officers who approached their location ahead of the convoy they were escorting to alleviate traffic congestion. Upon sighting the officers, the criminals opened fire, prompting a retaliatory response from other personnel who, mindful of the surrounding motorists, engaged in a firefight and compelled the attackers to flee.
A mobile Forward Operating Base, deployed by the police for intensive patrols during the Christmas celebrations, swiftly responded to the scene. The team recovered a Lexus SUV utilized by the gang and successfully neutralized an improvised explosive device discovered in the vehicle. Additionally, an AK-47 rifle belonging to one of the deceased officers was retrieved.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, stating that the Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, who had designated the weekend and Christmas holidays as special working days for all officers and personnel, commended their unwavering dedication in safeguarding the people of Anambra State. He urged them not to be disheartened by the sacrifice made by their colleagues from the Enugu State Command but to draw inspiration from their bravery in confronting the criminal gang.
Expressing condolences to the families of the deceased officers and the Enugu State Police Command, CP Aderemi Adeoye assured that the personnel’s sacrifice would not be in vain. He called on all officers and personnel of the Anambra State Police Command to intensify their efforts and maintain vigilance. The Commissioner pledged the use of technology to track down the criminals responsible for the attack on police personnel.
In an effort to reassure the citizens of Anambra State, the Commissioner encouraged them not to succumb to fear but to continue with their planned activities for the yuletide season.
