Ezego was not just a wealthy man; he was a legend in his own right. His garages in Ihiala and Lagos were more than just spaces for vehicles; they were showcases of luxury. At one point, the value of his garage alone soared to almost one billion naira. The man who once spent a staggering N14 million to acquire just two posh cars, a Sedan Lincoln Continental Mark 8 and a Mercedes Benz R230 convertible from Moontrends, left behind a fleet of state-of-the-art cars at the time of his death.
His opulence extended beyond his garage, encompassing a real estate empire that spanned 70 houses across Nigeria and overseas. In addition to his material wealth, Ezego left behind billions in his bank accounts. His flamboyant lifestyle and myriad possessions were a testament to his larger-than-life personality.
Ezego’s personal life was no less dramatic. Married to the fair-complexioned and beautiful Laurita Nkechi, a princess from Akata in Imo State, their union produced eight children. However, the tycoon’s penchant for relationships outside of marriage added a layer of controversy to his legacy.
The climax of Ezego’s story was his mysterious and untimely death on December 25, 1999, at the age of 34. His tradition of visiting his hometown in Ihiala during Christmas took a tragic turn that year. Little did he know that his trip, which started from Lagos on the 23rd of December, would unwittingly become a journey to his own funeral. CONTINUE READING
Initially planning to take a flight from Lagos to Enugu, Ezego changed his mind due to the perceived fatal rates of air crashes during that period. Opting for a road trip, he faced a series of unfortunate events. The Cherokee car he was driving broke down along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, compelling him to tow it using a Lexus car.
Two kilometers from Ihiala, tragedy struck. A pothole, a misplaced step on the brakes, and the towed Cherokee car collided with Ezego’s Lexus, sending both vehicles tumbling into a ditch. The impact left Ezego with severe head injuries.
Rushed to the Lady of Lourdes Hospital, where he had made a significant donation years before, Ezego’s life hung in the balance. Despite the medical team’s frantic efforts, all attempts to stabilize him failed. His family suggested transferring him to an advanced hospital in Port Harcourt, but on the way, Ezego reportedly succumbed to an unconscious and blurry death.
Ezego’s death marked the beginning of a series of strange and mysterious events. His once-grand houses and luxurious cars were left damaged and abandoned, leaving behind a legacy that continues to captivate and perplex. The enigma of Victor Okafor, the ill-fated tycoon, endures, leaving behind questions that may never be fully answered.
In the wake of his demise, Ezego’s larger-than-life persona lives on in the memories of those who witnessed his extravagant lifestyle and in the strange aftermath that followed his untimely death.
