This batch of oil represents a segment of the broader phases entailed in the supply of 6 million barrels of crude oil. These barrels are set to be provided by a variety of suppliers to the 650,000 barrels per day (b/d) refinery.
Despite being Africa’s largest oil producer, Nigeria currently imports refined petrol due to the dysfunctionality of its four refineries. Oil explorers in the country export crude to foreign refiners and then reimport it for sale to downstream players, leading to a depletion of foreign exchange reserves.
The operation of the refinery is anticipated to transform Nigeria, the largest oil producer in Africa, into a net exporter of fuels—an objective that has long been sought by the country, which heavily relies on imports and is a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Dangote, the owner of the refinery, has confirmed that the long-awaited facility will commence operations with a daily production capacity of 350,000 barrels. The production of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) and JetA1 (aviation fuel) is expected to commence in January 2024. According to an insider cited by The Punch, a minimum of six million barrels of oil is required to initiate production in a refinery with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.
Dangote has expressed expectations for additional cargoes to be supplied by the state oil firm NNPC Ltd, as well as one from ExxonMobil, in the current month. Furthermore, he recently announced plans to publicly list his Dangote Petroleum Refinery on the Nigerian Exchange Limited.
