The visit came just three days after Uzodimma’s ally and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Henry Ikoh, visited Otti and commended him for his developmental achievements in Abia State.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Uzodimma dismissed suggestions of political intent, describing the visit as a friendly New Year courtesy call in the spirit of the season. He stressed that South-East governors are committed to collaborating for regional development, regardless of party affiliations.
“My visit is simply a courtesy call to the Governor, who I see is performing very well,” Uzodimma said. “I wished him a happy New Year and prayed for strength to continue serving our people effectively. That is the purpose of my visit.”
Uzodimma highlighted that collaboration among governors is essential for the South East’s progress.
“As the Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum, it is my responsibility to engage with my colleagues, share ideas, and agree on strategies that will improve the lives of our people,” he added.
He also affirmed the unity of South-East governors in ensuring the region remains fully integrated within Nigeria. “The five South-East governors have resolved to maintain the region’s position as an integral part of the country,” he said.
In addition to his role as South-East Governors’ Forum Chairman, Uzodimma also coordinates the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in the region and chairs the Progressive Governors Forum. He commended Otti for his governance in Abia State.
Responding, Governor Otti thanked Uzodimma for the visit and dismissed claims of political motivation. “This is not a political visit, though we are all politicians, so discussing politics is inevitable,” he said.
Otti stressed that party differences should not be mistaken for opposition. “You cannot be opposition in a government you are part of. Disagreements are normal, but once a decision is taken, you are part of it,” he said.
Otti reaffirmed that Abia State remains committed to Nigeria’s federal structure, adding that the visit was primarily an exchange of New Year goodwill.
The Labour Party governor has attracted interest from multiple political parties, including overtures from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), APC, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Despite the attention, Otti has maintained his allegiance to the Labour Party, stating he would only consider leaving if the party’s leadership crisis becomes unresolvable.
Uzodimma was accompanied by former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim, while Abia State’s Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, and other cabinet members hosted the delegation.
