Protesters have taken their hunger demonstrations directly to the home of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike. On Tuesday, the demonstrators, fueled by frustration over the nation’s economic issues, barricaded Wike’s residence in Port Harcourt, fervently singing the old national anthem.
As the protests reached their sixth day, the crowd, holding palm fronds, marched towards Wike’s heavily guarded mansion. Despite the heavy police presence, including a tank stationed outside the property, the protesters maintained a respectful distance from the vehicle. They congregated on the road in front of the mansion, chanting the “Arise, O compatriots” anthem and waving palm fronds intermittently.
The nationwide protests, which began last Thursday, have seen demonstrators voicing their discontent over economic hardships, including rising inflation, naira devaluation, and the removal of fuel subsidies. Wike, who had previously opposed the protests, had denied a request from the Take It Back movement to use Eagles Square in Abuja for their gatherings.
In July, Wike urged the protesters to forgo their demonstrations, framing the current economic difficulties as a necessary sacrifice for the nation’s future progress. “Hunger has been an issue for some time. Our role is to support the government’s success. I understand the pain you are enduring; it is your contribution to the country’s advancement,” Wike said at the time.
