Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has provided insights into why he did not initiate the construction of new schools during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.
Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide and influential figure on social media, had issued a challenge to Obi and his supporters, urging them to identify a single school built during Obi’s eight-year tenure as governor. Omokri even pledged a reward of $10,000 to anyone who could provide evidence of such construction.
Responding to Omokri during a press conference in Abuja, Obi asserted that those making such claims had failed to grasp the essence of his manifesto. He emphasized that when he assumed office, Anambra State was ranked 26th in the nation, plagued by derelict schools and a failing educational system. However, by the time he completed his tenure, Anambra had ascended to a prominent position in terms of educational standards.
Obi clarified, “I prioritized improving the quality of life, both physically and mentally, for the people of Anambra. Schools were equipped with the essential resources needed, and the people thrived under my leadership. This was the core of my manifesto.”
He likened the construction of new schools without addressing the deficiencies in existing ones to building coastal lines while neglecting internal roads.
Obi’s explanation sheds light on his governance approach, emphasizing the importance of optimizing existing resources and infrastructure before embarking on new projects.
