On July 30, shortly after performing at the 80th birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Onwenu collapsed after returning to her seat. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos but unfortunately did not survive. She was 72 years old.

A video of her final performance, captured moments before her collapse, has been released. In the footage, she appears vibrant and full of energy.
