On Thursday, September 12, 2024, armed bandits launched a deadly assault on construction workers along the Funtua-Gusau highway in Zamfara State, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers and five policemen. The attack occurred around 9:00 a.m. at Yandoton-Tsafe village in the Tsafe Local Government Area.

According to local resident Mubarak Mohammed, the security personnel—assigned to protect workers from Setraco Nigeria Limited—were stationed at the site when the bandits emerged from hiding and opened fire. The deceased officers were tasked with safeguarding the roadwork on the Gusau-Tsafe-Zaria route.

Mohammed recounted that the bandits had set up an ambush in a nearby field. When the police and military arrived, the bandits began shooting immediately, leading to a fierce firefight. During the clash, additional security personnel were killed, and several bandits were reportedly neutralized.

The violence caused widespread chaos, with motorists fleeing and abandoning their vehicles in a panic. Mohammed noted that despite months of work on the road, progress has been limited due to frequent attacks by bandits.

Zamfara State Police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar confirmed the attack but was unable to provide an exact number of casualties as he awaited a detailed report from the field team. “We are addressing the situation and will release a detailed statement once our officers return,” Abubakar said. “Our team has been in the bush conducting a rescue operation, and we are trying to establish communication with them.”

Local sources indicated that the assault might have been orchestrated by the notorious bandit leader Dan Yusuf, who is known to be the younger brother of another infamous criminal, Ado Alliero.
