He issued this advice in reaction to the tragic d3ath of a Nigerian woman who, according to him, suffered physical, financial, and emotional abuse in her marriage.
Bernard argued that marriages are more likely to thrive when men marry women less successful than themselves, but the reverse often leads to problems.
In his words:
“A man can successfully marry down, not the other way round! Sefa Awen was an employee of Doosuursh Awen. She married him and moved him into her house — a classical mistake in choosing a man. If you’re a successful woman, aim higher. Don’t settle for a muscular or bearded man without a Kobo. If you make the fatal mistake of marrying down as a woman, you’ll either end up six feet under or buried in drama and despair.”
