Visa Breakthrough: UK, Canada Citizens Can Extend New Zealand Working Holiday Stay
New Zealand has announced that citizens of the United Kingdom and Canada holding eligible Working Holiday Visas can extend their stay beyond the standard one-year period under arrangements provided through the Working Holiday Scheme Subsequent Work Visa.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Immigration New Zealand has established specific conditions for eligible applicants, with the duration of any extension depending on the applicant’s nationality and the terms of the working holiday agreement between New Zealand and their country.
Canadian citizens who are currently in New Zealand on a 12-month working holiday visa may apply for an additional period of up to 11 months. If approved, this could allow them to remain in the country for almost two years in total.
British citizens have access to a longer extension. Those who entered New Zealand on a United Kingdom Working Holiday Visa valid for 12 months or more may be able to apply for a subsequent work visa covering the remaining period permitted under the arrangement, up to a maximum total stay of 36 months.
The subsequent work visa is designed to allow eligible working holiday participants to complete the period permitted under their respective bilateral arrangements. It is not a separate working holiday entitlement but rather a mechanism for extending the applicant’s authorised stay within the applicable maximum period.
Applicants are required to submit their extension applications while they are in New Zealand and before their existing Working Holiday Visa expires. They must also satisfy the relevant eligibility requirements attached to their nationality and visa arrangement.
The rules mean that eligible British citizens could potentially spend up to three years in New Zealand under the applicable working holiday scheme, while eligible Canadians have a shorter maximum combined period.
Immigration New Zealand administers the arrangements and sets out the requirements applicants must meet, including applicable age restrictions and other conditions for obtaining the subsequent work visa. The length of stay available to each applicant ultimately depends on the specific working holiday agreement covering their nationality.
