WAEC Announces New Registrar As Former Nigeria Office Boss Takes Over
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Nigerian education administrator, Dr Amos Josiah Dangut, as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer for a five-year term running from October 2026 to September 2031.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Dangut’s appointment was announced by the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Accra, Demianus G. Ojijeogu.
The appointment was ratified by WAEC’s governing Council during its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.
Dangut officially assumed office on October 1, 2026, succeeding Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia and becoming the 14th Registrar of the examination body.
Before his new appointment, Dangut served as Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office from October 2023 until September 2026.
Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture with specialisation in Animal Production, which he obtained in 1991. He later earned a Master of Science degree in Animal Science in 1994, a PhD in Animal Science in 2017 and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning in 2020.
He began his career in education in 1994 at St. Louis College, Jos, where he worked as a WAEC examiner before joining the examination council in 1998.
Over the course of his career at WAEC, Dangut held several positions, including Assistant Registrar in the Test Development Division in Ogba, Lagos; Head of Examinations Security and Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi; and Branch Controller in Yola.
He subsequently served as Controller of the Post-Examinations Department, Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja and Deputy Registrar before becoming Head of the Nigeria National Office.
With more than two decades of experience in examination administration, Dangut has been involved in the adoption of technology to improve various aspects of WAEC’s operations.
During his tenure as Head of the Nigeria National Office, several digital initiatives were introduced, including Computer-Based WASSCE, the serialization of examination question papers and a Digital Electronic Marking System.
He also oversaw the implementation of the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and digital systems designed to support examination logistics and the monitoring of examiners.
His work in examination administration has earned him recognition, including commendation from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his handling of examination matters between 2000 and 2006. He also received an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government during his National Youth Service Corps programme.
Beyond WAEC, Dangut has served on the boards of institutions including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and Grange Educational Foundation.
He has also represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.
Dangut has published academic research in national and international journals and presented papers at conferences. He currently serves as the West African sub-region’s Regional Representative on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.
The new WAEC Registrar is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management.
