WAFCON Sh*ck: Kanu Reveals Super Falcons Haven’t Recovered From Painful Exit

Super Falcons forward Uchenna Kanu has revealed that Nigeria’s players are still struggling to recover emotionally from their disappointing exit from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Super Falcons were knocked out of the competition following a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday night.

The victory sent Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses into the semi-finals, where they will face hosts Morocco, while also securing their automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria’s path to the 2027 World Cup has now become more complicated, with the Super Falcons needing to go through the World Cup playoffs to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Kanu disclosed that the disappointment remained fresh among the players more than 24 hours after the defeat, with some members of the squad reportedly struggling to eat.

Speaking to ESPN, the forward said the mood within the team remained sombre as the players continued to process the result.

“I think right now, it is late the next day after the game, and people are still dragging their feet,” Kanu said.

“We are still sad. I’m still sad. It has been long hours from the game and everybody’s just been down, to be honest. Right from the moment after the game, the emotion was really high.”

Kanu explained that some players were so affected by the defeat that they skipped meals.

“People are still in their feelings. Some people didn’t even come out today for breakfast. Most of us, like myself, I didn’t have breakfast. I didn’t show up to lunch.

“It was later in the afternoon that I decided to eat something. And it is just the same as some of my teammates. We’ve all been down,” she added.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s hopes of defending their WAFCON title and left the 10-time African champions facing an uncertain wait for the World Cup playoffs as they continue their quest to reach the 2027 global tournament.
