The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, clarified that the Ministry of Niger Delta Development has not been scrapped but rather expanded into the Ministry of Regional Development to encompass a broader mandate. The purpose of this change is to bring progress and development closer to the people across various regions.

In his explanation, the minister outlined the functions of the different Regional Development Commissions, including:

  1. Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) – Focused on addressing the development needs of the Niger Delta region.
  2. South East Development Commission (SEDC) – Targeting growth and infrastructure improvement in the South East.
  3. North East Development Commission (NEDC) – Concentrating on reconstruction and development in the North East, especially in areas impacted by conflict.
  4. North West Development Commission (NWDC) – Driving development initiatives in the North West, addressing challenges like poverty and unemployment.

This expanded ministry, now led by Hon. Abubakar Momoh, aims to ensure that all regions benefit from equitable development efforts, delivering progress to the nooks and crannies of Nigeria, with a focus on regional-specific needs.
