Wike made the remarks on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Kuje-Gwagwalada Road in Abuja, an event attended by several dignitaries, including Yobo.

Speaking during the ceremony, the minister said many Nigerians remain disappointed by the Super Eagles’ inability to qualify for the global football tournament despite the abundance of talented players representing the country across top leagues around the world.

According to Wike, there is widespread frustration among football fans who expected Nigeria to secure a place at the competition, particularly given the quality of players available to the national team.

He noted that while some people may continue to applaud the team, many Nigerians are unhappy with the outcome of the qualification campaign and expect better performances going forward.

The FCT minister lamented having to watch countries with less established football reputations compete on the world stage while Nigeria remains absent from the tournament.

He observed that numerous Nigerian players are currently excelling at club level across different parts of the world, making the country’s failure to qualify even more difficult for many supporters to accept.

Addressing Yobo directly, Wike urged the former international to convey the disappointment of football-loving Nigerians to members of the Super Eagles.

Nigeria missed out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after an underwhelming campaign in the African qualifiers.

The Super Eagles’ hopes of reaching the tournament eventually ended following defeat to Congo in the qualification playoffs, bringing their World Cup aspirations to an end.
