At a press briefing in Moscow on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia is keeping a watchful eye on the situation and urged all parties to adhere to international legal norms.
“We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms,” Zakharova said in response to a question from Anadolu News Agency.
Context: Trump’s Military Threat
Zakharova’s comments come a week after Trump announced that he had instructed the Pentagon to prepare “options for possible military measures” against terrorist groups operating in Nigeria, claiming the move was meant to protect Christian communities.
On November 1, Trump posted on Truth Social that Christianity in Nigeria faced an “existential threat,” alleging that “thousands of Christians are being killed” by radical Islamist groups.
“I am hereby designating Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern.’ The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening. We are ready, willing, and able to protect our Christian population around the world,” he wrote.
Trump also directed U.S. lawmakers, including Congressman Barry Moore and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, to investigate the situation and report back.
Nigeria Responds
The Federal Government of Nigeria swiftly dismissed Trump’s statements, emphasizing that the country protects the rights and freedoms of all religious groups. President Bola Tinubu rejected the CPC designation as misleading and politically motivated, noting that insecurity affects citizens of all faiths. Officials also criticized foreign narratives that oversimplify the country’s complex security challenges.
Russia Calls for Responsible Action
Russia’s statement follows other global reactions to Trump’s comments and reports that U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) was reviewing contingency plans. Zakharova urged the U.S. and its allies to act responsibly and within international law, warning that erratic interventions often worsen tensions instead of resolving them.
