In one alarming case, a Fulani man — whose identity is being protected for safety reasons — recounted how he was viciously beaten by vigilantes after he was unable to meet their extortion demands.
According to him, his ordeal began shortly after purchasing a motorcycle. The group demanded ₦10,000, but he explained he only had ₦2,000 available.
“One of them got angry and started beating me. The rest joined in until I lost consciousness,” he said. “They also took my ₦40,000 and my power bank.”
The man said he was eventually taken to a nearby hospital, treated, and discharged. Despite lodging a complaint with authorities, he claims no action has been taken, and none of his stolen items have been returned.
Adding to his trauma, he revealed that the same vigilantes now taunt him in public.
“There is no justice,” he lamented. “They move around freely and mock me whenever they see me. This is the daily reality many are suffering.”
Security analyst Zagazola Makama raised concerns on (formerly Twitter), warning that impunity among vigilantes could further destroy public confidence in the justice system and fuel retaliatory violence.
“When citizens witness law enforcers acting above the law without consequences, it encourages revenge attacks and deepens the cycle of banditry,” he stated.
Despite the rising outcry, there have been no visible measures taken by authorities to regulate or discipline vigilante groups accused of abuse — leaving many communities trapped between bandits and those who claim to protect them.
