We Had No Proper Kits – Odemwingie Opens Up On Nigeria’s Beijing Olympics Ordeal

Former Super Eagles forward Osaze Odemwingie has revealed how an administrative error left Nigeria’s U-23 team without enough official match kits during their impressive run to the final of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Odemwingie disclosed the incident while speaking with Super Falcons captain Rashidat Ajibade, recalling the unusual challenges the team faced during the tournament under coach Samson Siasia.

Odemwingie explained that officials had apparently expected the Nigerian team to be eliminated in the early stages of the competition. As a result, the squad’s official kits were reportedly sent back to Nigeria, leaving the players without sufficient outfits when they advanced beyond the group stage.

With the team unexpectedly progressing, the players were forced to improvise. Odemwingie said they resorted to wearing kits left behind by the women’s national team, while some players purchased plain white T-shirts to supplement what they had.

“At the Beijing Olympics with Siasia, we had to wear the girls’ kits for the second round and the rest,” Odemwingie recalled.

He explained that the decision to send the team’s kits back was based on the expectation that Nigeria would not progress far in the competition.

The former West Bromwich Albion player also recalled how the situation attracted the attention of opponents, with members of the United States team joking about the Nigerians repeatedly wearing the same outfits.

“Then we made it out of the group, and the American team is saying, ‘You guys are wearing the same clothes all the time’. They laughed at us,” he said.

“Some of us went to buy plain white T-shirts.”

Despite the embarrassing kit shortage, Siasia’s team continued to produce strong performances on the pitch. Nigeria defeated Ivory Coast and Belgium in the knockout stages to secure a place in the gold medal match.

The Dream Team eventually finished with a silver medal after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Argentina in the final. Ángel Di María scored the decisive goal as Argentina claimed the Olympic football gold medal.
