We Won’t Be Poor for Praising God! – Gospel Stars Fire Back at Pastor Oyakhilome’s Controversial Remarks

Pastor Oyakhilome expressed his disapproval of gospel singers who charge fees for their performances, claiming that such actions indicate they are not truly singing for God. He argued that churches have increasingly become places of entertainment rather than worship and predicted that gospel artists demanding payment would soon be phased out. The pastor further stated that he once celebrated gospel ministers until God instructed him to stop, adding that true churches of God would eventually cease inviting such ministers.

In an interview with Punch, Mike Abdul acknowledged the validity of the discussion, suggesting it serves as a reminder for gospel artists to maintain the right focus. He remarked, “This is just human nature. There will always be extremes where some individuals are drawn more to financial gain than the spiritual mission. The church has extended grace and support to gospel music, but when these issues arise, it’s up to us to address them. It’s a necessary conversation to ensure we stay grounded and do what is right. We need to establish structures to handle financial matters and ensure the sustainability of our work.”

Conversely, Esther Igbekele argued that gospel musicians should not be condemned to poverty simply because they chose to serve through music. She emphasized that they have financial obligations and families to support. “Choosing gospel music is a calling, but that doesn’t mean you should be wretched. When you serve the Lord, He blesses you. As I speak, I’m on my way to a program from Lagos to Akure. You know the cost of such travel, and I’m working with adults who have families and bills to pay. If they’re not compensated, they won’t follow you. Worshipping God doesn’t mean you should live in penury,” she said.
