Wednesday Meeting Set Between Panel And ASUU Over Strike Concerns

This development follows a closed-door meeting between ASUU’s leadership and representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, led by Prof. Tahir Mamman. Piwuna confirmed the establishment of the committees, tasked with resolving issues related to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and salary matters.

On August 19, 2024, during a national executive council meeting at the University of Ibadan, ASUU threatened a nationwide strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to honor the 2009 renegotiated agreement. ASUU’s demands include better welfare, increased university funding, and a halt to the expansion of universities.

In response, Minister of Education Tahir Mamman acknowledged that many of ASUU’s concerns date back to 1981. He assured that letters of invitation had been sent to union leaders and that steps are being taken to address their grievances. Mamman noted that while some issues, like exiting the IPPIS, have been resolved by the President, implementation delays are due to bureaucratic processes. He emphasized the President’s commitment to finding a permanent solution and urged ASUU to approach negotiations with an open mind to ensure all interests are considered.
