What Really Happened? Abuja Police Intensify Probe Into Mary Habila’s Death

According to SaharaReporters, sources familiar with the investigation disclosed that a police directive was sent to the Ebonyi State Police Command in Abakaliki ordering the transfer of all case files to the Federal Capital Territory.

The sources also revealed that Habila’s remains may be moved to Abuja for a forensic autopsy aimed at establishing the exact cause of her death.

The latest development follows reports that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, allegedly requested that both the police investigation and the planned autopsy be moved from Ebonyi State to Abuja amid increasing public scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death.

According to the report, unnamed sources claimed the minister was dissatisfied with the handling of the investigation by the Ebonyi State Police Command after details of the incident became public.

Despite the reported concerns, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru was said to have insisted that investigators conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry to determine whether foul play was involved.

“The governor insisted that the police should carry out a proper investigation instead of allowing the matter to be swept under the carpet,” one of the sources reportedly said.

The report further claimed that the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Hope Urunwa Okafor, was summoned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja earlier this week over the case.

Sources alleged that although the police commissioner came under pressure regarding the handling of the investigation, he resisted any action that could compromise the integrity of the probe.

The police have yet to issue an official statement confirming the reported transfer of the investigation.
