WHO Chief Declares 2023 A Year Of Remarkable Achievements And Urges Global Efforts To Minimize Preventable Suffering

Dr. Ghebreyesus pointed out success stories in malaria eradication by Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and Belize, as well as progress in eliminating tropical diseases in various countries. The fight against polio reached its final stage, and the introduction of the HPV vaccine in 30 more countries advanced efforts to eliminate cervical cancer.

The WHO Chief emphasized increased attention to the health impacts of the climate crisis, with health issues prominently featured at the COP28 conference in Dubai. In September, Heads of State committed to advancing universal health coverage, ending tuberculosis, and protecting against future pandemics.

Despite these accomplishments, Dr. Tedros acknowledged the “immense and avoidable suffering and threats to health.” He expressed deep concern over events like the attacks by Hamas on Israel, gender-based violence, and mistreatment of hostages. The devastating attack on Gaza resulted in a high toll of casualties and a severe impact on healthcare infrastructure.

Conflict and insecurity in countries like Sudan, Ukraine, Ethiopia, and Myanmar also marked the global landscape. Dr. Ghebreyesus stressed the interconnection between peace and health, noting that poverty and lack of access to clean water contributed to infectious disease spread, including the resurgence of cholera.

Looking ahead to 2024, the WHO chief highlighted the opportunity to address gaps in global pandemic preparedness. Governments are currently negotiating the Pandemic Accord, a groundbreaking global agreement aimed at enhancing collaboration, cooperation, and equity in responding to future pandemics. Dr. Tedros concluded his message by expressing gratitude to health workers, partners, and colleagues, emphasizing the shared journey to achieve health for all.
