The clarification followed an announcement on Tuesday by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), confirming that a small team of American personnel had been deployed to Nigeria.
Speaking in Dakar, Senegal, AFRICOM Commander General Dagvin Anderson stated that the deployment was made at Nigeria’s request and is focused solely on providing intelligence support.
“Our partnership with Nigeria is a great example of a willing and capable ally requesting unique capabilities that only the United States can provide,” Anderson said.
The announcement sparked public speculation and concerns over Nigeria’s sovereignty, prompting Defence Minister General Christopher Musa (retd.) to address the matter.
In an interview with the BBC, Musa clarified that the American personnel are not combat troops but a small advisory team assisting with intelligence gathering and training initiatives. He declined to disclose the team’s size, arrival date, location, or length of stay.
The development follows joint operations conducted on December 25, 2025, when the US military collaborated with the Nigerian Armed Forces on air interdiction missions in the North-West and North-Central regions as part of ongoing international cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism.
Despite these assurances, public debate has resurfaced, with some Nigerians expressing concerns that foreign troops could compromise the country’s sovereignty.
In response, the All Progressives Congress (APC) stressed that the collaboration between Nigeria and the United States is fully coordinated and poses no threat to national independence.
Speaking on ARISE Television on Wednesday, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said the partnership is focused entirely on defeating terrorism.
“What we know is that the US government and Nigerian authorities are working closely to defeat terrorism in our country,” Morka said.
“Terrorism has caused immense pain and suffering, with innocent citizens senselessly killed by violent actors.”
He added that President Bola Tinubu remains committed to taking all necessary measures to eliminate terrorist threats and restore security nationwide.
Dismissing fears of foreign intervention, Morka explained that such concerns usually arise when host nations are excluded from decision-making — a situation he emphasised does not apply to Nigeria.
“This is a coordinated effort between the Nigerian government and the United States, with both sides fully involved in all decisions,” he said.
According to Morka, all actions on the ground will strictly follow agreements jointly reached by both governments.
“Whatever is agreed at the table is what will be implemented,” he added, stressing that protecting Nigerian lives and defeating terrorist groups remain the top priorities.
