The decision has sparked debate on social media, with critics suggesting that her approach resembles what they term as “wasteful government” practices seen in Nigeria.

In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by her Press Secretary, Madueke Chinenye, Alims defended her choice, emphasizing that it was aimed at ensuring effective governance and addressing the needs of the university’s over 42,000 students, spread across 20 faculties and more than 110 departments.

The statement, titled “Addressing Concerns on Appointments,” explained, “The SUG’s mission is to enhance the welfare and progress of our university community. Effective governance for such a large student body necessitates a collaborative effort. A diverse and strong team is essential for successful implementation of our initiatives.”

Alims highlighted that the appointments were voluntary and unpaid, aimed at career development and fostering a sense of responsibility among the appointees. Each aide was selected through a rigorous screening process by the Senate Committee and took an Oath of Office.

She praised some appointees for their national and international recognition for voluntary work and assured the university community that the aides would contribute effectively to her administration’s objectives.

Alims, a student in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution at the Department of Political Science, was elected SUG President on June 14, 2024.
